North Durham Prostate Cancer
Support Group - Home
Launched in October 2005 by John Saxby, Chief Executive of County Durham and Darlington Acute Hospitals Trust, the Prostate Cancer Support Group attracts people affected by Prostate Cancer
including patients, friends and family from not only County Durham, but North Yorkshire and Newcastle.
Modelled very much on the pattern of
'Talk Tent' groups set up by our patron, Ken Calman, we offer support according to the PEPSI acronym -
Physical, Emotional, Psychological, Spiritual & Information
Our aims & objectives are threefold:
SUPPORT
Support of patients, their families and friends who have been or are affected by prostate cancer.
AWARENESS
Spreading awareness of Prostate Cancer, encouraging men to seek help from their GP's, as early diagnosis and treatment is crucial to survival; also to GP's, as many still discourage men from being tested. We have done this by a display hosted by the Marks & Spencer store in Durham City in connection with Prostate Cancer Awareness Week; part of the Staff Training programme of County Durham & Darlington Fire & Rescue Service, and at other venues and events.
SEEKING
Seeking to achieve greater equity in the provision of and access to diagnosis and treatment. We are particularly concerned that no curative treatment is offered to men diagnosed at or over the age of 70, directly flouting The Department of Health's National Service Framework for Older People.
North Durham Prostate Cancer Support Group are delighted that 3 MP's
Roberta Blackman-Woods (City of Durham)
Kevan Jones (North Durham)
Hillary Armstrong (North West Durham)
have signed up to support the Prostate Cancer Charter for Action.
